P4 Finding solutions

This program is based on the conviction that an increased exchange of experiences between students and graduates of Western European music and art academies and the teams of the partner opera houses of the region will lead to a considerable mutual enrichment. This aim will be achieved by organizing the visits of interested and qualified Western European young artists and young managers at the theatres by means of scholarships. The offers always match the requests of the directors of the partner opera houses. The scholarship holders come from the artistic fields of stage direction, dramaturgy, conducting, as well as financial management and are part of the team for the duration of a production.
For instance a young conductor in charge of the rehearsals for a new production both supports the team and he himself gains precious practical experience on an international level himself.

“…we are convinced that, out of the work of specialists with our orchestras and choirs, new trends in structural development will arise…”

Corneliu Murgu, director of the Opera House Timisoara

Opera and cultural diversity in 21st century Europe
RESEO conference 31 May-2 June 2007 Madlenianum Opera and Theatre, Belgrade, Serbia

As a network of fifty opera houses from twenty countries, RESEO embodies diversity. For its members, opera and opera education are not something fixed. RESEO members look for change and evolution in their work through contact with others across national and cultural boundaries. The activities of the network - which regularly bring together opera managers, academics, instrumentalists, singers, teachers and, more recently, dancers - bring to life the ideal of intercultural dialogue; dialogue which is often further explored in projects between members.
The Madlenianum Opera and Theatre in Belgrade, who is the only Balkan member, has welcomed the conference in the year 2007. RESEO organised this event in association with Central and Eastern European Musiktheater , a network which has considerable local experience of developing the opera sector in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania and Serbia itself.
This conference encouraged the opera sector to consider the opportunities of intercultural dialogue closer to home. The association RESEO explored the responsibilities of opera houses and their education departments to make their activities open to the broadest cross-section of the communities they serve. They looked at ethnic diversity and considered the socio-economic factors that influence the ability of opera companies to reflect their communities.
Never above multiple challenges, RESEO has done its own bit for intercultural dialogue and workforce development! So they organised a creative residency in Belgrade, from 30 May – 1 June 2007 with the theme Madam Butterfly. This training opportunity was opened to young artists from across Europe.

Madama Butterfly Creative Residency at the Reseo Conference in Belgrade, Madlenianum Opera & Theatre An artists’ training opportunity

To coincide with its conference in Belgrade on cultural diversity, RESEO has invited young artists to participate in a creative residency based on Madama Butterfly. Following the success of a similar RESEO project at the European Opera Days in Paris, this residency was an opportunity for RESEO members and their artists to learn new workshop techniques to develop their own creative responses to opera repertoire.
At this creative residency, two exceptional British artists, the composer Hannah Conway and stage director Karen Gillingham , worked over three days with a group of artists and animateurs to create their own response to Madama Butterfly. A number of young artists from the Balkan region ( Aleksa Vasic, Vedrana Simic, - scholarship holders of Central & Eastern European Musiktheater) also attended to the workshop.
Participants took an active part in composition, singing, movement and drama improvisation workshops in which they explored the musical and dramatic aspects of Madama Butterfly, which was presented to and discussed with the conferences delegates.

The international production team with Angela Zabrsa ( Director ), Anna Katharina Strobl (Set and Costumes) and Wolfgang von Zoubek (Light Design and Stage Setting) and Bojan Canev and Boris Spassov (Conductors) managed the respective staging with the brilliant Opera Orchestras. The exchange of the artists had afforded the possibility to produce the Opera of W. A. Mozart and to enlarge their artistic potential.

„Le Nozze di Figaro“ in Bukarest

The successful premiere of Mozarts Opera „Le Nozze di Figaro“ took place at the end of 2006 in Bucharest and it will be presented in Timisoara in the year 2007. The reason of another great co-production of two Opera Houses is the collaboration of national and international artists who had the possibility to gain new experiences. Alexander Radulescu, the German director with Rumanian roots, Adriana Urmuszescu, the set and costume designer from Bucharest and the Italian conductor David Crescenzi worked a sophisticated and high-valued musical production out.
